World-famous artist Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was a
Dutch painter and etcher widely considered one of the greatest in European
history. He was born in Leiden, the Netherlands, and started to show talent
from an early age as an artist. However he took time and went to learn from
many as he studied under a number of painters in Leiden and Amsterdam,
including Pieter
Lastman. from the 1620s, he began to establish himself as a painter in
Amsterdam.

Rembrandt is commonly known for his dramatic use of light
and shadow, and his extraordinary aptitude to express human emotion and
character in his portraits, historical scenes, and genre paintings. Some of his
most famous works include "The Night Watch," "The Anatomy Lesson

In addition to his painting, Rembrandt was also a prolific
etcher, producing over 300 prints during his lifetime. His etchings are notable

financial difficulties throughout his career and was declared bankrupt in 1656. However, he continued to paint and etch, and is considered a master of the
Dutch Golden Age of painting.
