Monet, Claude ( 1840-1926, French landscape painter, b. Paris. Monet was a founder of impressionism. He adhered to its principles throughout his long career and is considered the most consistently representative painter of the school as well as one of the foremost painters of landscape in the history of art.
In 1872, he painted Impression,Sunrise. It hung in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and is now displayed in the MuseeMarmottan Monet in Paris. From the painting's title, art critic Louis Leroy coined the term " Impressionism", which he intended as disparagement but which the Impressionists appropriated for themselves.
